2 stainless bolt questions...

1, are cap head bolts suitable for SVA when used to hols a steering wheel on?
i can't seem to find any suitable unc thread button head jobbies....

2, what grade of stainless is high tensile (if any) i want to get some for my engine mounts. not sure this is the best idea... maybe i should be looking at normal steel ones?

stainless bolts

mine passed sva and every bolt on the chassis is stainless as chassis is stainless also dome heads in front wishbones as no sharp edges. On the other hand if you mix stainless with mild steel you will get electrolysis and they will go rusty.

has stainless got a higher strength that mild steel then? or is there a particular grade i should go for?

also, did you use cap head bolt for your steering wheel?

I believe A4 80 are approximately equal to 8.8 as far as tensile strength is concerned.

That's what I have used anyway. (Fingers crossed for SVA)

I too used SS cap heads 6off on the steering wheel quick release boss ,

Tensile & Yield strengths as below for SS and steel .

A2-70 made from 302 Stainless ts 102.00 psi , ys 65.000 psi
A4-80 made from 316 Stainless ts 116.000 psi , ys 87.000 psi

8.8 steel ts 116.000 psi , ys 93.000 psi
10.9 steel ts 151.000 psi , ys 136.000 psi
12.9 steel ts 177.000 psi, ys 160.000 psi

Stainless steel should not be used in areas of high stress.

wot t hey say - stainless is not as strong as 8.8 - as shown by the table above.

I have 6 stainless m5 cap heads holding o n mountney wheel on my land rover with fat off road tyre - these would get more stress than a puny little 7 and so far the wheel has not come off - it is the friction between the boss and wheel that keeps it together n ot the sheer stress of the bolt - if you have ever tyr to cut an M5 botl with bolt cutters it take quite a bit of erffort and you have 6 of them.

I wouldn;t use them for suspension though.

aluminium and staniless steel make an unhappy combintion - bit of grease stops that.

lol i'm not worried about the stress on a steering whell for the bolts. that was a question of sharp edges, the stress question was for using them on engine mounts and the like

The table shows that A4 stainless has the same tensile strength as 8.8 grade bolts but about 7% lower yield strength. You might be able to use A4 in place of 8.8 on the following grounds:

8.8 bolts are more than strong enough already. (If you are within 7% of the yield strength, you shouldn't be using such a small bolt to start with).

you fit a larger size bolt (3% more diameter), so if an 8.8 grade 10mm bolt is strong enough, you need a 10.3mm A4 stainless bolt or bigger.

You fit more bolts. If something is mounted with 4 bolts of 8.8 grade, use 5 A4 grade bolts.

The main issue with stainless isnt the strength its fatigue.

Stainless fatigues very quickly even when stressed well below its yeild strength.

Steel doesnt suffer that same problems.

Ive only used stainless in areas where aesthetics are more important than strength. As above - wouldnt use stainless in areas of potential stress.

Planning to put 6 stainless bolts to hold steering wheel on. Dont see an issue with this.
