New MK Exhaust?
trottski - 28/7/08 at 10:27 AM

Hi,

From reading some threads on here I gather a a few of you aren't having noise problems with a standard MK exhaust? If so, is it like mine, pictured below, or have they released a new larger version since?

Also, what static RPM are you being tested at? Brands did me at 5.5K rpm, which I've read is the correct RPM for testing 1000cc bikes at, whereas Goodwood, with its 98db static limit, made me test at 8K rpm, which was around 103db.

P.S., I've got a R1 4XV engine.

A couple of points. It may need repacking as it degrades fairly quickly.

The other point is that on my Blade engine in the MNR a significant proportion of the noise picked up was from the engine itself and not out of the exhaust. We tested this at the SVA and when we put something in the way of the mic and engine it dropped significantly.

I though engine noise was also affecting my tests at Goodwood but after bolting on a DB killer like device* it went down to 98dbish at probably 7Krpm, so they let me on.

Any recommendations for repacking?

* I had a Supertrapp fitted on the original 103db test which proved to be useless.

There is a larger MK box. The one in your picture looks like the original I had from a couple of years back. That used to have problems with noise.

There are pictures in my archive of my new one in the zorst folder. I think it is 6" diameter and 26" long. I needed a front bracket as it was too heavy just on the rear one. I have a feeling that they may do a 7" one now - the diameter is what matters.

Thanks but I couldn't find any pictures on your photo archive page.

I've email MK to see what the damage will be.

Thanks. Any idea what db reading you're getting now at 3/4 RPM static tests? My goal is to be able to pass the 98db static.

You should be able to get that if you have the exhaust packed well and an airbox - don't forget induction noise as well
