MK II Escort Steering Rack
DaniSinn - 20/7/02 at 12:23 PM

Hey Guys, I've just started adding all the brackets and stuff to the basic standard chassis, and I've just realised that the MK II Escort steering rack I've bought hasn't got any mounting clamps. I've tried everywhere but no one seems to have any idea where I can get a pair from! Just wondered if anyone has any ideas? Or is it gonna be a case of going down the scrappy and raiding an old Sierra? Cheers for any hep given.

Scrappy is the best bet, or Ian Harwood (sorry, no contact details, Google is your friend) might be able to help.

Don't know if the Sierra clamps will fit though?

i made and weld'd two brackets to mine, mounts put on chassis to siut, job done...

think locost....

on the BEC list there is a big debate, people saying, "you can't build a BEC for under 3K" well i and others have, but the same people post a question like
"where can i buy mounting brackets for my quaif reverse gearbox ?" Make the buggers is the answer, no wonder they can't get to grips with a 3K supercar eater....

Iain harwood 0151 339 2801 or fax 0151 356 5008 but i think there closed on mondays but dont quote me on that

Too right John! "Where can I buy?" is for the seven lists"

Recent US sevens list dialog:

(as near as I can recall, not involving me BTW)

"I made my own front hubs"
"Where did you buy them?"
"No I made them"
"Oh, you had someone make them!"
"No I made them"
"Made them !!!!"
"Yes, went on a lathe and turned them"

The locost spirit is not universally understood

(BTW this is NOT a dig at the DaniSinn, just following up on John's point)

johnston - 20/7/02 at 06:04 PM

i agree with the make them bit but when it comes to steering or brakes i think if your not confident in makin them u maybe go with wot you know will be right and most importantly safe.

Fatboy Dave - 20/7/02 at 07:01 PM

OI! I'm on the seven lists!

Know what you mean though. Far too many people just interested in buying something rarther than finding another way around it (or worse, paying someone to do it for them).

Mind you, I've gotten all that out of my system now that my Locost tally is approaching double figures.

No dig at people who can't do it for themselves mind.

johnston - 20/7/02 at 07:16 PM

i tink every1 has to remember that every1s skills and experiance is different and i hope to make as much stuff as humanly possible but if theres any doubt in my mind thats its not safe it will either get done again or i will get someone i trust to do it for me

Remember your not the only one usin the road!!!

Darren George stocks 'em

Hi Dave,

Er... I'm on the seven list too (how do think I got the thread to quote?)

But, yes I agree about no dig at anyone who can't do everything themselves. Not everyone has a lathe at work (many offices for example don't have lathes ) It's really as Jon says though, you can't bitch about the cost unless you do a lot yourself, visit the scrappies a lot or are very creative. Usually a combination of all of those is, to me, the spirit of "locosting".

oh i agree with that

thats the handy thing bout workin in a mtr factors car will b built round more modern bits ie bushes outta mondeos and peugeots and stuff sometimes a part comes in and u stop and think here that wil do and if its outta 1990 car it will b avalable for a lot longer than a herald bush

though i think my boss is fed up wit me trailin through catolougues all day..

and its amazin wot cars use the same bits

Fatboy Dave - 21/7/02 at 02:29 PM

D'oh! Shouldn't reply when trying to do three other things!

On which note, and probably completely unrelated, I reckon Ronny C did do it for 250......

I prefer to think of it more along the lines of the 50s special builders mind. They were trying to go faster before most of us were born

Ian Pearson - 21/7/02 at 07:41 PM

Darren George supplies what you need. No connection etc, but been very happy with the quality & service from GTS Cougar.

Ian.

I got loads of brakes bits from Darren, I also bought my Nitron coil-overs from him. Spanking...

I think it's also worth bearing in mind the time factor- particularly for less experienced builders (myself being a prime example).
When I started this I was very much in favour of making everything myself even though a lot of stuff meant learning whole new skills ie. welding or remembering old skills (I haven't used a lathe in 6/7 years!).
This was all well and good but the whole thing is taking so long I'm getting very frustrated. I've now decided to selectively buy some parts just so as to cut down on build time.
In my opinion (only) an 'on the road' car that I've built 80% of is better than a pile of parts in the garage!

Just my two pennies,

James

Oh, come on don't tell me now that you won't be making your own tyres
Seriously though, another good point. Often it's a trade-off and sometimes it helps to put a figure on your own time to help decide when to buy or when to make. when you are crazy enough to make your own body (like me) then the only thing I could do to save time would be to wave some cash at mould maker, trouble is it would probably be quite a lot, I'd bet 10k wouldn't be enough so unfortunately (sp) I'm stuck with doing it myself.
And to stay on topic, I wouldn't normally consider making a rack...although many people will mod. them!

interestedparty - 22/7/02 at 12:31 PM

I agree.

John

johnston - 22/7/02 at 11:10 PM

Talking bout makin bodies spoke to a guy who builds those racing sailin boats at bout 30odd ft for a hobbie (who also very handly done 3yrs automotive design b4 yacht design) reckons bout a grand to build a full body like the westy xtr or the new mk in fibre glass. that includes getting the stencils laer cut for the bucks for the moulds

the trouble is he's bored usin fibre glass ha wants to make it outta carbon
