What is the best hand brake cable option for a live axle car, i have RS 2000 drums its a book built car. Do i use alegro cables as mentioned by Ron
or not? what have has others used.
Pushing on now for the SVA.
Cheers
I've got a Cortina axle and shortened Cortina cable.
I used the whole escort setup with a shortened cable. I bent the reaction rod to clear the n/s chassis member and where the cable crosses the o/s
member it runs in a nylon slipper block that I keep greased.
No problem with SVA and no problem on the road.
Get rid of the cross rod it causes major problems with unequal hanbrake operation, it has to be perfectly in adjustment and the rubber flap hinge
thingy in good condition ie not rock hard with age.
A few alternative solutions are
Single cables
(1) Fit a shortened late Marina or Ital handbrake cable,
this was a common fix for Escort MK1 and MK2 hanbrakes back in the late 1970s early 80s.
The cable is an almost exact replacement for the Escort cable but lets you throw the cross rod away. --- runs over the axle and the outer sheath is
supported by a large loosely fastened cable tie round the axle (exactly as it was on the Ital).
(2) Use MGB cable as above but shorter --- late 1500 Midget cable might also fit even shorter but might be on the narrow side accross the axle.
Twin cables
(3) Allegro cables.
(4) 1950's MG TF or MG TD handbrake cables --- similar to two cable set to Allegro but perfect for the job very easily available and
surprisingly cheap use early BL Mini or Mopris Minor handbrake lever.
(5) Shortened Morris Minor cables -- longer version of MG TF cables.

I forgot to add a lot of builders rotate the back plates and redrill them so the linkage clears the panhard rod.
I have an Escort live axle fitted with 8" drumbrakes and found that Toyota Corolla handbrake cables (for the 2000+ model year with rear caliper)
fit.
There is a clevis on one end that fits onto the Ford drumbrake handbrake lever and a nipple on the other end. I also got the handbrake lever (from
within the cab' ) to make it easier to fit.
I'm sure you could make a bracket to connect the cable ends to just about any lever.

Thanks for that it will give me a few e-bay options.
