Sierra steering rack
Graceland - 24/1/04 at 01:20 PM

anyone used a sierra rack? the PAS flavour one is 2.5 turns lock to lock - wondered if the internals (ie - the rack ad the gear on the shaft end) could be used in a non pas case, as the non pas model is 4.5 turns lock to lock

cheers

bugger. lol

wonder if i could use the PAS rack without the PAS gubbins.......IE - normal unaided steering

There was some discussion of this before, and the concensus was that it probably wouldn't pass SVA given the normal "if it's there, it has to work" approach.

2.5 turns to lock with no assistance is gonna be pretty hard to turn! except the car is quite light i guess...

could be something to test post SVA?!

there are a lot more bits n peices inside a pas rack, doubt if you could use the rack n pinion bits only in a non pas case

Whats the optimun rack spec ie turns lock to lock, is there anything that you can use as standard or is it a specialy made rack. If so where to get one from and what sort of money are they.

Thanks Gordon

Rallynuts.com have got Sierra quick racks on order,I'll post more as,when and if I hear more...............
Sending an email to Nick at Rallynuts might not be a bad idea. At the very least it'll jog his memory.

why not just use the quick rack and not plug in the assist pipes, or is this not how it works? legally the steering has to work if the assist fails anyway, same with the brakes.

need oil in the rack to keep it lubricated as there are pressure pistons inside it that need to be lubed to stop them sezing - so looping the pipes will keep the oil in and lubed inside aswell

The Indy is the only one I know that uses it and that is a cut down version modified by MK on exchange. The standard rack body is way too long.
