Is it possible to fit pretty much any gearbox to any engine? I.e. can I fit (for example) a Hayabusa gearbox to a ford engine with some kind of adapter? Ideally I'm looking for that straight up-and-down gearchange but I'm mostly looking for the same kind of 6-speed box I'm used to

i'm fairly sure that most bike gearboxes are integrated, so would be nearly impossible to fit to a car, sequential boxes are availble for car engines but there mega bucks.

As usual i'm sure someone will correct me in a bit

I was driving my girlfriend's car last week, and when the song died down the engine sounded like I was going for it, so I reached for the gearstick and nearly yanked it into reverse! Don't really like the sound of 3500 rpm unless I'm pushing it

Bike engine gearboxes are part of the engine and cannot be fiited to car engines.
As said if you want 6 speed sequential either move to the dark (lighter) side or spend £000's on a gearbox.

The only non unitary bike gearboxes are those which are fitted to American V twins.

Christ you're right! Is that the kind of price I'm looking at or is there any other car I could get one off so I can get a bog standard one (as opposed to an £8k racing model)?

Are there actually any "road" cars with a six speed sequential?
Potentially any of these, you could have an adaptor plate made to fit your engine

The sequential part of it is more a nice touch than something I'm actually looking for.

*Edit* found a few that match, most are from vans so will a box off a diesel engine have any inherent problems?

Your biggest problem with most modern six-speed box's will be physical size - the van ones are HUGE
How about a budget type nine sequential ? Just bolt on one of these (about half way down the page , no prices unfortunately )

Caterham and Burton Performance do 6 speed sequentials based on the Type 9, very expensive

You want a Drenth box.

How about Mazda's AZ6 gearbox, as used in the mx5. Not sequential (no sequential conversions afaik), but it's nice and light, and holds 300+ftlbs (none have been reported as breaking on miata.net forums).

The AZ6 is also used in the RX8, which puts the starter motor on the gearbox side, if that suits you better.

Isn't the T56 a 6-speed T5? Not had much experience with them, but that might be another option...

Aha didn't know about the MX-5, that's going to be a nice and small one too :-)

I've no idea if the starter motor being at the gearbox would suit me better, as long as it starts!

Also the T56, is that a Volvo?
