What axle with a chevy Ls1 V8 engined 7??
gregf27 - 11/2/09 at 08:30 PM

I fancy doing another build in a couple of years time, a 7 style Ls1 - Ls7 powered V8 with a tremec g/box,
but was wondering whatt rear axle to use?
I have heard that a jeep cherokee lsd rear axle would be able to cope with the power, and you can buy one for about £100 -£150, but what ratios would be best??
any ideas/ web sites welcomed,
Greg

Live axle or IRS? if live, you could go for an Atlas from a 2.8 capri. LSD, nice tall 3.09 ratio and plenty strong enough and loads of ratios and upgrades available.

That's what i'm using. Easy to do a disc conversion to aswell.

Live axle, Ford 9" lots of gear choices, used by almost all V8 race cars in North America.

I think PPC magazine are using a Volvo axle with a Saab 2.3 turbo engine in a Ford Escort project build. Well engineered and quite cheap in comparison to some of the Ford axles from what I remember of the article.

the volvo axle is a dana 30 diff, fitted to the front of jeeps .

the best one to get is an LSD version of a ford explorer , its a ford 8.8 axle , will be plenty up to it and the mustang uses the pumpkin so carbon clutches are available to uprate teh std LSD .

me ?

id pick a volvo one !
