Anyone got a de-dion and a tape measure?!
Mr Whippy - 17/2/09 at 10:34 AM

Hi

Odd question but does anyone have a de-dion axle handy on their car that they would be kind enough to measure the distance between the two flanges I’ve indicated by the arrows. Just trying to confirm my Scorpio drive shafts will fit fine, which seemed ok assembled on the MK rear end but look rather long when I fitted them into this last night

I compared my axle to the dimensions on the Rorty De-Dion plans and come up 35mm short on the width of my axle, clarification needed I think

Thanks

Not being funny but you did compress them in did you?

35mm compression across all 4 CV joints would seem about right wouldn't it.

I'm sure Whip will have checked that tho'

Yeah pushed them back and forward, getting 13-15mm travel in each inner joint. Not sure if the Scorpio & the sierra both shared identical length driveshaft and also why my axle is 35mm narrower than then Rorty one, given the small amount of travel afforded by the CV joints.

do all the joints have horizontal travel or just the two inner ones? Maybe my joints are a bit tight from laying in the trailer so long.

bolt-on CV's ? - all joints 4 are identical

I'll try and look up the driveshaft lenghts later if I get a chance (the nice people at the local motorfactors gave me some spare cataloges)

its bolt on, hmm I think the joints need a good seeing too as I couldn't get the outer ones to slide, thanks

is that the same type of tube that broke in the middle on someone elses car?

3GEComponents - 17/2/09 at 01:13 PM

Face to face measurement should be 1360mm, IIRC, it's been a while, most of the old information has been pushed out by all Chris G's new stuff

John

I built my own de deon axle to suit sierra shafts, will measure it latter , I also removed the circlip from both inner cv's ( the one on the rubber boot side ) and that lets the shafts push an extra few mm s into the inside part of the cv, that made a difference that stops the tyres fowling the rear arches ( ie I built the axle as narrow as possible )

yes, I think it is the same type.
But 'Someone else' deleted all their threads so you won't find it if you search..
