Drum wont fit over brake shoes?
Dangle_kt - 6/4/09 at 05:18 PM

Hi,

Motoring through my pre SVA prep work, and was putting locking fluid on all the bolts I;d undone during the build.

I needed to refit the bolts that hold the half shaft bearing into the backplate.

Removed wheel, removed bolts, locktight applied, tightened back up again, and now I can;t get the bloomin drum back on the shoes!

Any advise please guys/girls?

Thanks in advance.

sounds like something needs to be wound back in?

you have to push the pistons back into the wheel cylinders, just push the shoes in a bit. Make sure you haven't put the handbrake on or anything silly like that.

tried that already... is there some sort of adjuster on escort english axle drum brakes?

MK2's have a self adjuster ratchet that might need persuading right back. it will re-adjust once the drums are back on with the action of the brake.

Hi where is this on the back plate? or what does it look like?

final question, how can I persuade it? hammer?

The ratchet is a "quadrant" shaped thing with a serrated edge.

Use a small flatbladed screwdrive to prise apart the quadrant from the mechanism slightly and it will push towards the backplate making the whole assembly shrink and allowing the drum on.

Hi thanks for that. I dont know what you mean by quadrant, but there is a funny shapped "hockey stick end" shaped thing with a serrated edge. if I try to prize it from the shoe, the shoe moves and it stays still.

Should I hit it? Getting really annoyed with this now.

When I refit the drum it just sits on the sides of the shoe and if I try to whack it on, it sounds like its hitting metal.

GRRRRRR! And I've still got the other side to do when I finnally get it back on.

Would releasing all the brake fluid help? I;d rather rebleed the brakes than faff with it much more, its doing my head in!

lol ok.

There is a big serated bit and a small serated bit. put a flatbladed screwdriver between them and push back on the big part, it should move the big part inwards towards the back plate allowing the shoes to move closer together!

I can't remember what the inside of my english looks like but have you anything like this:

in there, basically something that looks like it ratchets round when needed?
Take a piccie and post it, it'll make it easier to point out hopefully

You my friend are a legend.

ITS ON!

Just threadlocked the spacer on and the car is now the proud owener of 4 wheels.

Tis a thing of beauty.

no probs lol

just make sure now that the serated part has adjusted back up. A few presses on the slow pedal should do it!
