Handling master class

I have been struggling the handling of my locost since I first got it through the SVA. The handling was pants at anything over about 30mph.

I have done some investigations since the winter and found that the suspension has now settled, pushing the back axel one side about 9mm via the panard rod. I have since corrected this.

I have also been struggling to set the front tracking, I have tried all sorts of weird and wonderful ideas, and before I spent any more money on lengths of steel to bolt to the front hubs, I purchased a Gunsosn trakrite from ebay (£37 brand new)

I have just tried it out, wow…… I had to seriously adjust my front end which looked ok’ish by eye, approx 5mm on one side & 2mm on the other. I set it to ½ degree toe in.

I thought there way no way I was that far out, so took it for a careful spin. By the time I got to end of my road, I knew it was different. By the time I got to the bypass, I knew it as very different, the self centring had really kicked in, it wasn’t light and skittish and unpredictable I corners etc.

I am now all grins for weekend, what’s the forcast javascript:icon(''

Top tip, don’t mess about just by a Gunsons trakrite!!!

Cheers,

B

I have set the camber to 1 degree negative (top in)

The castor angle is about 8 degrees (steering is now quite heavy, but nice)

I don’t have fully adjustable damping coil-overs, so use standard 275lbs springs with adjustable platforms.

The ride height at the front is set by getting the car on level ground (harder than it sounds as my garage isn’t level) then set the bottom wish bones to be horizontal.

The tracking was the final thing which has suddenly brought it all together.

HTH.

I agree, I do have a lot of caster, the reason is, i remade my wishbones to increase the self centering because i thought (incorrectly in hindsight) that this was the cause of my poor handeling.

I'm using Sierra Uprights.
