Sierra drums...handbrake...etc...please help

Hi,

my SVA retest is this tuesday so i'm really getting worried about my rear brakes. Fitted new cables, shoes, drums and wheel cylinders to the rear of my tiger. I can only seem to get the handbrake to work on the left hand side. I have tried everything i can think of. Adjusting cables etc etc. The self adjusters seem to work when the drums are of. (i reset them before refitting). Also the left hand side rear brake (when operated by the foot brake) locks before any other wheel. It is almost "too good" if there is such a thing.

Can anyone help i am going crazy...

Never yet found an auto adjuster to work . Slacken off the hand brake cable then use a lever on the brake shoe to operate the adjuster one click at a time, refitting and testing the drum rotates easily each click. Carry on until the drum just starts to bind , repeat for other side. Only then adjust the handbrake cable .If you have bled the system and all else is well then you should have a decent foot and hand brakes.

Thank you for the reply. Do i need to operate the foot brake to set the adjusters before adjusting the handbrake?

No, do as said above adjust them manually until the drum starts to bind(with the handbrake cable slackend off)that way you should have a decent pedal, then adjust the handbrake cable, and bingo.

Ok. Made a start this morning and i think the adjusters are worn. Seem to adjust with the footbrake but i can hear them ping-ing off when i operate handbrake. Can i somehow regroove them? Just thinking of ways i can make it work today. Retest on tuesday and hoping to use local garage rolling road tomorrow.

Ok, just done a quick test in the vice. The adjuster taken from the side that worked cannot be moved in any position when i lean on it with a screwdriver. The adjuster from the side that is faulty can be pushed back from any position. The little grooves are worn down too much i think.

So i need a pair of auto adjusters for sierra drums. Anyone got any? Could really do with them today. OR is there any chance i can somehow re-use these. Somehow re-groove them?

I can't remember the geometry of the setup, so I don't know if regrooving them will work or if the radius of the quadrants would be too small. If re-grooving would work, then maybe a Dremel? It may be that the adjuster would wear very quickly after this, but you can replace them next week.

Ok, what i did was set the adjuster to where i wanted it then welded it to stop any movement. I know it's heath robinson but managed to pass sva. Getting new parts this week but as a temporary solution it was ok
