Clutch pipe joining ?
Scoobythedog - 29/4/09 at 05:14 PM

Im using a ford focus gearbox, the clutch pipe is steel and 6mm, I need to join it to copper brake pipe, which is just over 4mm.

The problem is the clutch pipe is not flared and I have nothing to flare the steel pipe with, is there another way to join the pipe to the copper brake pipe ?

Any ideas, and If I need to get a flare put on it, were do I get the connectors from ?

doesn't that steel pipe unscrew from the clutch slave? if it does, then make up a whole new pipe

Shouldnt you use larger pipe for hydraulic clutches? I.e 1/4" not the 3/16" used for brake pipe? You need to flow a lot more fluid quickly for a clutch.

It does unscrew, however it comes out of the slave as a flexible hose, then runs into a steel pipe, (crimped) I wanted to retain the flexible nature to account for slight movement of the gearbox.

Is there nothing suitable with an olive that would allow me to reduce the pipe size ?

Surely you could use a reducing compression fitting, or does Mr Vosa not like them?

I've had/am having the same problem. I found some plastic clutch pipe (from a Marina IIRC!) and clamped it to the steel pipe with tiny hose clips. At the other end, I used the fitting htat was on the plastic pipe and connected it to a length of brake pipe. It worked fine but looked kack. I've been faffing with it today and I've now got a brake pipe coming from the slave cylinder, out of the bellhousing and up to the top of the rocker covers. Then I'm, using a short brake flexi from a Fiesta to go from the engine to the bulkhead and then brake pipe to the m/c.
The original one used bits of brake pipe and had no troubles. You're only moving a tiny bit of fluid.
