Hi all,

I want to remove the ignition lock and its housing from my Sierra non-adjustable steering column as I will not be using it on my MK Indy.

Do I just remove the gubbins and grind the housing off completely? Or is there a replacement top section I could get?

I'd like to keep the colapsable section if possible as I like the idea of that.

do you have the key? they are designed to be easy to remove when its inserted and sod if not. The switch is screwed on to the back btw if its just that which is faulty

To get a smooth column mac1 just ground the top section into a cylindical shape,

Mr Whippy - It works perfectly, I even have both keys, I just want the sleeker look as it's going to be a track only car.

If everything works OK then it'll be free to a good home.

Flamez - I thought that would be the way to go. Looks like the angry grinder is going to have a busy weekend.

I spent ages cutting the big bits off with a hacksaw.. then used a lathe to get a nice smooth top and sprayed it silver. If you want il get a picture up?

Takes about 20 minutes.

1 angry grinder
1 cutting disk
1 grinding disk

Cut it off with the cutting disk and make it right pretty with the grinding disk. Nowadways I'd pimp it up even further with a flap disc on the grinder but this way back in the day (in fact it was my first experience of using an angle grinder- would probably be a bit quicker nowadays).....

If youv got the key then you turn it to i think position 1 then press the little pin in and pull the barrel out. Then just remove the switch and take a grinder to the rest.

If its not position 1 then press the pin in while you turn the key and you will fell it push in.

If you want to remove it undamaged (a wise move) the body that the barrel locates in is secured to the column by 2 small grub screws

Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

I will remove everything that can be with a screwdriver, then take the angry grinder to the rest, and finally smooth it off on the lathe.

Trouble is because I've recently moved house, I can't get to the lathe or any of my other 'big' tools - yet.
