hi guys
Another question if I may.
Still trying to get my car back on the road, but only need driveshafts now, which I will hopefully order monday.
But this gives me the problem of trying to open up the Sierra tripod joints, so that they can be re-used. THe main problem being the metail cover that
sit round the outside. (Which I cannot get a replacement for, so needs to be reused)
I have tried to get the cover off by cutting off the little ledge that gets bent over the joint, this works well, but it leaves the rubber o ring
exposed.
My plan was to cut the ledge off and the tack the cover back in place, but obviously with the o-ring lying exposed it wont seal.
Could i tack weld the cover in place and then seal it with some clear silicone or similar?
Could weld it fully, but would prefer it if it was servicable, which would be easier if it is just tacked on.
Any ideas whether silicone would seal it? Or is there another way to seal it?
Lars
maybe im being a bit thick but what is a tripod joint?
Why do you need to open the joints up?
There is nothing serviceable inside.
They are actually called Tripode joints and are found on the sierra shafts with push in diffs and drum brakes.
David
oh i just call them cv joints
thanks for the explanation
David - don't really want to open them up, but I am going to get some new shafts, (shorter than standard), and they come without the joint, so I
need to attach the one I have.
And you need to open up the joint to get out the old shaft.
I have only tried this on a spare joint so far, if there is way to get the new shaft in without cutting this open, please let me know.
