As title sujests, I am collecting a Mk2 Capri axle tomorrow, I am thinking of making it an LSD. I understand that you need to weld the planet gears, although I know what they are I am unsure as to how/where to weld. Any idea how safe or reliable this is?

That will not be an lsd but it will be locked.

Thats not road legal as far as I know.

Just buy one allready done from the stock car boys.

No one near me has a stock car and locked is good enough for me

Never mind welding the planet gears - just weld the crown wheel and pinion , for a properly `locked` diff

To be serious - no , you cant just make a limited slip diff by welding bits together , you need to replace the diff internals (at more than a little cost )

Wouldn't fancy your tyre bill as it will scrub out tyres like mad as well as stress all your axle mounting points and bushes.

Sorry but if you aren't going to listen to people who know what they are talking about when it is very apparent that you don't - I would question whether you should be playing with cars at all

corners will be near impossible. tyres will last weeks, and if you try and take a corner fast (sounds like you plan to drive fast if you want an LSD), this 'straight' car of yours will be more banana shaped, with the help of a tree.

don't do it, it is the worst idea i've ever heard. if you want LSD, get a LSD.

my bmw has a lsd, and it was low on oil in the diff and kept locking itself up. it was difficult to reverse park, was impossible to keep straight on damp motorways (not even wet, just damp)

As above, a welded diff is not anything like a LSD. Welding up diff’s are for drag racing and pure offroad, not trying to drive on the road.

Look up wiki about diff’s, then you see the difference and why it would not work.

Welding a differential does not make it an LSD.
It makes it a solid axle with no differential action.
Not any use for the road and only really ever seen on things like autograss racers.

of course, if you just plan to go drifting, then a welded diff is fine.

But as others have said, terrible to the point of dangerous on the road.

Depending on the type of axle it would be possible to use a welded diff for drifting but you would have to pull the shafts to change it at an event . Can't remember offhand if a welded diff is illegal but having "tried" to drive a car with one I for one would be checking the MOT rules very carefully ? Suspect insurance would be invalid if the car was driven on the road with a locked diff as well

P.S. didn't the 2.8s have an LSD?

P.s. Are 2.8 capri atlas axles excruciatingly rare or something as I often look around for them but never see any for sale

they are very rare and very expensive when for sale, i got luck and manage to source one through the mazda club of all places!

i'm not receeding, i have it cut like that!!!
