feathered tyre wear
smart51 - 12/10/09 at 06:35 PM

After a recent track day with mostly left hand corners, the RHS rear tyre is worn in a feathered pattern but one I don't understand. The central rib is worn on the outside and sharp on the inside but the outer tread blocks are worn on the rear and sharp at the front.

I always thought that tread blocks wore on the edge in the direction of travel. I must have been travelling in reverse then.

What does this wear pattern mean?

The tracking out of adjustment causes feathering and I would suggest that the centre section wear is caused by incorrect tyre pressures. During track use the tyres will wear differently due to the high stress and temperatures

its caused by the toe or camber being out. had it on my eurobox. think it was toe at a guess but it was quite a while ago

I had it on the front of a 4x4. It was 4 wheel aligned to check and found to be spot on. The dealer put it down to tyre flex and scrubbing due to it being "an off-roader, not a bloody Subaru!!"
