whats the best way to shorten the handbrake cable, im running discs on the rear.

I never shortened my polo ones ( golf discs at rear) i fitted a pulley to the handbrake rod and routed the cable round the pulley and rearwards to a fixing point on the rear bulkhead.
it also means that you only need to move the handbrake half the distance to apply the brakes.

cut them with a sharp set of side cutters and use a terminal block on the end If I remember correctlr I soldered this on to the cable no problems on two cars one has done 10k

I cut mine, cut a length off a bolt which I'd previously drilled through the length of, inserted the cable end into it and blobbed the end with the welder (as per the Robin Hood Comedy Build Videos). Ten years on, it's still fine.

cut one end off cable then see you're local AA man. they carry a kit for doing "temporary" clutch and throttle cables. the end is held on with 2 grub screws, never had an issue with it at SVA.

If your going to cut the cable do not use a pair of sidecutters or pliers! Use a good sharp chisel , lay the cable on a vice or anvil and give the chisel a good sharp tap with a hammer. Try to cut the cable with one blow, you should end up with a nice clean cut.

ive found an angle grinder gives clean cuts through wire cable of all sizes. just keep fingers clear.

Oh yeah i forgot to mention. definately wrap with tape first.. a short bit of electrical tape tightly wound and then cut through the tape itself and go slow on the cutting. produces nice clean cuts on both sides.

Run Silver solder or brazing metal into the cable into the place on the cable you are going to cut -- no fray and the cable is tinned ready to solder the nipple on.
