Ali steering rack clamps from Rally Design - are they worth it
Steve Lovelock - 5/12/09 at 05:12 PM

I am re-fitting the steering rack to my Luego. I have a 2.9 Escort semi-quick rack. Previously I made a clamp out of flat steel strips bent to shape and fitted them to the rack and the ford rubber bushes. I note that RD stress that the ali clamps fix the rack without the use of bushes. Does this make much difference? Is it worth the £30-ish cost of the RD items?

Put it this way - why go to the trouble of making a stiff chassis with nice stiff wishbones and then let the rack move around in squidgy rubber bushes ?

They certainly tighten up the feel of the rack a little - look nice too

i made mine from 20mm ali....they work out about £20 to make....i didnt think about the rubbers causing a problem on the rack...i could make some to fit without the rubbers? just assumed that the rubber was like a damper....

I just used the original pressed steel clamps with poly urethane bushes instead of the rubber ones. They are very firm indeed and I doubt that they will move around much in use. I think the cost about £14 at the time.

I e got a pair of ali RD clamps if anyone wants them for £30 posted. Im not going to use them on my current car, so id like some money back for the stuff i bought. Ive already given loads away!

Just fitted them yesterday. They're nice pieces of kit but it took some filing of both the clamps and the steering rack (Ral Des quick rack) to make them fit.

They do look good though, especially fitted with allen head bolts

Hi

The trouble with the alloy clamps is that they are not realy a good fit over the rack body. And require shims underneath. This all leads to less rigid holding of the rack body in reality as your only gripping the rack body in a few areas.

For the most secure way to hold the rack use the uprated rubber of Polly bushes and then clamp with the original clamps. No movement and the body is 100% griped perfectly all round.

Cheers Matt
