SVA caps for Girling master cylinders

Just thought I'd pass on some information for people who need fluid level warning caps to suit Girling master cylinders. I just got two caps for an 89/90 Mk4 Escort from Ford at £7.92 each inc. VAT which fit and work fine. The part number is F6174635. Just be careful when you put them on as they only slowly fill with fluid and if you push them in to quick you get fluid all on the floor and none left for the brakes Found that out the hard way! You should be able to fit them without losing any fluid.

Pics in archive if you want a look.

Hmmm, looks good. Is the thread the same on both cap and cylinder?

How about the level sensor: does the indication correspond to the situation in the reservoir? In other words: low means low, and full means full???

It might be a solution for me, so I'm interested in the facts: does it really work SVA friendly?

Yes the cap and m/c are the same thread. As far as SVA goes I believe they just check that the dash light comes on when they press the switch on top, which they do. You need to wire them in parallel to ensure the light comes on when either one of them is pressed. As far as 'low means low', the light is off with the caps in place and fluid full. The switch part is approx 15mm from the bottom of the m/c and should come on if the fluid drops below this. I have not checked that this happens as draining the fluid to check the operation of the switch seems a bit of a pain. But I do know that the switch works if you remove the cap and let the fluid in the bowl drain i.e. same effect as low fliud. If you get the same caps there are three small terminals, just use the outside two for the wiring.
