does anyone know were i can get spax coilovers refurbished? i have two that have very rusty pistons that need to be sorted and not sure what to do.

If the spax you have are yellow then i believe they are not rebuildable,

As far as I know you are right Viper. I have some extremely old red spax which have screw-off tops but I have never seen these on any other car!!

are spax any good? i have some on the front and need some rears, i am undecided if i should get a complete set of 4 at stoneleigh or keep the spax on the front and just buy some matching rears. how can you tell if dampers are knackered, they don't leak or make any funny noises.

don't know much about spax (or any others actually); they have yellow bodies, you can adjust the spring length and it looks like there is a screw in the damper unit - does this mean they are adjustable dampers and if so, is it simply a case of turning the screw with a screwdriver to adjust?

Yes, the screw is the adjuster.

I am bound to start a big debate now but I PERSONALLY do not rate Spax dampers at all. I have used them because of their relatively low cost on several projects, and in all cases ended up chucking/selling them and replacing them with either Bilsteins or Avo's. As the AVO's are cheaper anyway and are cheap to rebuild/revalve, I would PERSONSALLY!! go for these every time now if on a low budget.

On my grasser (again see photo archive) I use (under the "shox-sox" Avo's on the rear (long travel) and Leda's on the front (short travel)

The Leda's were bought s/h in unknown condition and are the best dampers I have ever used! (I have never used any of the really expensive dampers though!!!)

That's my experience for what it's worth!

I've used spax on a project (in 1998) & I would look very hard before using them again - lousy quality, the springs collapsed & the dampers didn't after 2 years. To be fair they've (spax) gone through changes of ownership since then & may well have pulled their socks up. I bought gaz for the locost but know very little about them - time will tell!

According to popular theory most of the lower end dampers share internal components. The newer generation Protech and Nitrons are completely different.
