Handbrake Cable Shortening

I have a brand new sierra handbrake cable, i don't think its OEM but I don't suppose that matters.

What are my options for shortening the cable, I understand I could clamp it but I read somewhere that the IVA guy at Newcastle doesn't like clamps and I will be using Newcastle.

I have the same problem so will be interested to hear too. I've also heard that they won't accept u-clamps etc at the IVA?

Been thinking about this too, Planning to joint in the tunnel so inspectr cant see.

Accoring to this site linkthe single ones do 50% of the wire strength the double ones do 80% - so need to test if they are good enough?

I just made a new nipple on the end of my cable with weld. The inspector [for SVA] never questioned it.

How easy is it to weld the cable? I thought it might just burn away.

so your saying I should cut the thing that attaches to the caliper off the cable. drill the cable out where it is welded in and then re-fit and re-weld somehow?

I have an escort cable i was going to weld the old clevis' on but wasnt sure whether it would be IVA ok so will be watching this thread closely

Mine was a Sierra cable that just had a nipple on the end. I cut this off, cut the cable to length and migged a blob of weld on the end. It didn't burn the cable away, and has been on the car for 3 or so years now with no probs.

I guess if an IVA inspector took a close look they wouldn't be happy, but I took a chance and it wasn't mentioned.

I guess you need to state whether Drums or Discs I have discs so will try to make the joint in the tunnel like westfield do.

Me too, and I dont know if he needs to look inside, will check - but I was watching Mark Evans building his Westfiled on TV and there appeared to be a joint in the tunnel, it used a crimped ferrule. Maybe thats the way but looking at the tools they are mighty expensive.

Go to a sail supply outlet and have them swedge threaded ends to your cable. Most of these are stainless steel and you now have adjustment. The ends I am discussing usually go into a turnbuckle to adjust mast stays.

I soldered a terminal block to the end had no problems and done t to 3 cables now

It's a bad idea to hide it from the Inspector. If you need to hide it, it just isn't right.

You will have trouble welding cable but silver soldering is a piece of cake. If you have access to a lathe, drill down the length of an M8 bolt using a long 3mm drill. Countersink hole and then feed the cable through until the cable appears at the other end. You can then braze into the countersink and the cable cannot pull out. Do the same with the second cable and fit through a compenasator bar. The threaded ends of your cable allow adjustment. Simple and it will please the Inspector.

I'd just solder it but use some silver solder. Either that or I would just tig weld a new steel barrel on to the shortened cable. Shouldn't give any problems! Worth checking that it does not let go before you use it mind!

as I have started typing it has pretty much all made sense

the single cable im presuming attaches direct to the handbrake and then the 2 cables to either side

nope it pretty much all makes sense now

That's absolutely right Mike and it works really well; automatic balance and plenty of adjustment.

The cable started life, as yours, as a Sierra one just cut into two pieces.

why not just use one of these obtainable from your friendly AA man ( it's part of a standard cable kit used by them for road side repairs or from MK

Details of how I added some home-made ferrules onto a handbrake cable towards the bottom of this page. Works nicely - I can hoy on them as hard as I like and they stay in place. Which is more than can be said for my efforts to weld/solder them into place...
