Anotherdave - 20/8/02 at 06:49 PM

I have been considering using my beamer for donor, Does anyone have any knowledge as these for donors and can i still construct the chassis as Book and fit the engine/box/axle from the BMW.

Hiya..

You can use virtually any car as a donor if you're willing to put plenty work into making it fit...

Not quite the same, but I'm currently stripping a BMW M535i as a donor.

That requires major redesigning...

As for keeping the chassis the same, you may have to add an inch or so to the height of the top rails to compensate for the height of the engine.

Mail me if you want to compare BMW notes..

i looked at using an 80's 318 as a donor, and i bought a haynes manual to see if it was possible. As far as I could see, it looks good. The only thing you need to watch for is that the engine is a slant 4, and you dont want the engine hanging over the side of the chassis. My current car is a 2 year old 318 (POS) and the engine on that is pretty wide even canted over.

If people can shove a V6 or a V8 into a chassis 4 inches wider then I can't see a problem.

There's one or two designs knocking about for the slightly wider chassis.

Could be worth you looking into.

Cheers.

the beemer 318 ia quite wide at the bottom, where a locost chassis isnt.

Thanks for that the slant of the engine was my main concern and the way the plenum chamber sits, its my First locost so if the escort Mk2 donor comes first, may make the first simple. And advance later to say the BMW. The beamer an 86 model and is staying for a while and possibley its last stop will be the locost. If not this one then my next.

How many times do you guys need telling! The germans bombed our chippy, no kraut or nippon engines etc. thank you very much! Whatever happened to patriotism eh?

ahh....my V6 is a cologne built engine, so not chippy compatable?

I live near a place called wellingborough. There was a commemoration a week or so back about a ww2 bomb dropped on the town. It landed on a tea room. Now a mcdonalds. Wheres a german when you need one

btw - looking at my engine, it seems wide at the bottom cos bmw seem to have pushed all the engine anciliaries right to the bottom of the engine. Having said that it still looks pretty full down there. A locost has quite a taper at the front and base, which really isnt set up for a fat engine.

However, Liam, who's been a mite quite of late, is using a v6 2.7l honda engine and when I saw one at the scrappy they look really wide at the base too....so whats the solution Liam?
