Where is the Track measured between?

When talking about the track of a car where is this measured between? Is it the face the wheel bolts up against?

John.

I think it is the distance between the centres of the tyre treads, but I stand to be corrected.

Yes, middle of tyre to middle of tyre on same axle.

Centre line of tyres but I have never seen this defined in an authoritative source such a an SAE standard.

so track depends on tyre width and wheel offset as well as hub to hub distance?

That's interesting because it means the track will be less than the width across the mounting flanges.

Which, for the sake of measure is of cause the same as from one edge to the other.
