finally got round to mapping my car, but have found a couple of issues

THe main one is that there apears to be a clicking/"loose bolt in a metal box" type noise on the rear near side

It does not happen all the time but appears particularly pertinent when cornering (right hand bends) and can also happen on uneven roads.

I checked the rear for obvious problems but could not spot anything.
Will investigate further over the next few days, but thought I would ask if anyone else has had this problem.

I am driving a dedion rear with a lsd slipper and drum brakes (both sierra), with custom shafts

Anyone know what might cause this

Bearing?

you mean wheel bearing?
it will probably be one of the first things to change, as it it one of the easier things to change
unless of course someone can tell me what else it may be

anyone one know if it is likely to be caused by the diff?

I guess this is a new noise? Or have you only just got on the road? I do get plenty of odd transmission noises, not quite lose nut in a box though!

Sounds like a wheel bearing starting to break up to me.

it is just back on the road following the dedion conversion
donor bits from scrap yard, so unknown condition.

Wheel bearing usually rumble when on the way out, I have never heard of one that sounded like a "loose bolt in a metal box". Easy way to check is jack up the car and spin the wheel, if it's a nackered bearing you will soon hear it. HTH Cheers Ray

Have a look and check its not the alternator fan catching on the chassis and that all the engine mountings are tight.

might change the rear bearing anyway, cheap and straight forward

Chippy - I will try that but not sure if that will tell me anymore as I can even drive along on a the flat an will hear no noise.

It seems mostly on hard cornering (right hand bends)

If you've got bolt on shaft to the diff, I would suggest a CV joint.

yes it is bolt on, but the cv joint is brand new.
It is cheap enough to replace, so will try it. However wheel bearing is second hand so will probably try that first.

Checkall the drum springs and shoes. I had this on my c class (never buy a mercedes) and it was the brake springs inside the drum rubbing on the wheel bolts. Every revolution there was a loud "Ping". Eventually it went TWANG, as the spring broke, just before i got to the garage.

I would have sworn blind my noise was coming from the back.. but it was the alternator on the chassis after the engine mounts had come a little loose so don't rule it out without having a quick look.

matt has agreed to help me changing the wheel bearing so will do that at the weekend too.


i shall let you guys know once i find out what it was

We've picked up a bit of grit in the alternator (sprinting on airfields !) sounds exactly as you describe, my remedy is - hoping it drops out!
