I need to pull mine apart to weld on axle mounts and I dont really want to buy a haynes for the only escort component on the whole car

Cheers

Easy, 4 bolts at the ends holding the backplates and shafts, remove and pull. Out they pop, weld away and replace

Thinking of new bearings? That's another story, you'll see when you pull the shafts out!

Found some stuff online, there seem to be two options, either two taper bearings back to back or a cartridge type ball bearing like the front of modern hatchbacks?

I assume nothing retains the shaft apart from the outer bearing?

Cheers

yes but what holds the bearing in place?

There is a collar that is pressed onto the shaft that hold the bearing in place. For peace of mind, peeps will slap 2 blobs of weld, one each side for balance, to stick the collar to the half shaft.

the only other thing you need for assembly is to know about setting the drive flange bearing preload.
