quick front brake line question
L5W - 6/7/10 at 12:31 PM

Hi,

Image below shows how I've routed my front brake lines so that they're supported by and connect to the flexi hoses through the bodywork. Is this considered secure enough for IVA or should there be extra support in this area for the joint, an L-shaped bracket maybe thats fixed onto the lower chassis rail?

I've had a look through the iva manual but couldn't find anything specific, it just says "All brake mechanical components must be secure, with relevant securing bolts, locking devices, retaining device etc present and secure"

Cheers,

Lee

Not sure. Some have had problems as the GRP is not considered by some testers as secure in accident so bracket would fix this worry..

change that lower clip for a P clip, and i'd thinkit should be fine

That clip is as used by major manufactuers (they never use P clips) and therefore OK for IVA.

Some have had trouble with flexi's attached direct through GRP. It pretty much depends on the testers interpretation.

i was thinking that 'if' the fibreglass was to flap about, the pipe won't come loose in a P clip, but might pull out of one of those

thanks all.

I'll try and get over to the IVA centre to see what they think as they'll be doing the test when mine is ready, luckily the Norwich IVA is just up the road from me. Whilst there I'll ask about the different pipe clips too and reply here for anyone else searching on this subject.

Cheers,

Lee

Roight,

I managed to get over the the IVA center in Norwich today to ask about brakes. The examiner was a bit pushed for time as he was in the middle of testing an off road buggy (it looked very smart!)

I showed the examiner the image above and the suggestion was to reinforce the area with a large washer inside the bodywork. I mentioned welding an L-shaped bracket to the chassis and he said "even better".

I totally forgot to ask about p clips vs. push-in type clips but did ask about whether rivnuts are a suitable method for fixing brake T's to chassis members rather than drilling right through the box section and securing with a nut and bolt. He said rivnuts are fine provided the brake T feels secure and solid so shouldn't be an issue.

I thanked the examiner very much for his time and went on my way.

I feel a bit happier now as I've fixed my brake T with a rivnut but its position is right behind one of the wishbone brackets (I know, not too clever on my part). At least now I know, there shouldn't be any need to re-mount the T piece.

cheers,

Lee
