Front Spring ratings........
Bumble - 3/8/10 at 09:06 AM

Hopefully someone can help me......
I have Protech adjustbale shocks all round but can't get decent ride height at front as springs not up to the job. I have no idea what they are rated at but they are 8" in length. I need to get some 9" springs but what rating would you recommend for front springs on a CEC (Zetec)?
Thanks.

Mine are 9 inch with 340lb per inch

Engine is crossflow

Hope this helps

Ive got some 9 inch springs rated 250lb if your interested. They should be enough for your car. I take it you want to lift the front?

Hi

First question. Do you have an original MK locost book chassis or an MK indy chassis. I have been through you pic's and think it is a original book chassis not an indy. There's a difference in poundage's required due to the indy having the dampers at that silly angle and inboard from the outer joint.

If it is a book chassis then 300Lb is about right for road with a few track days but if doing more track than road work then 350Lb. Those will get you right into the ballpark but may want moving up or down by 20-30 to suit individual application. But you will need to be pushing on at a fair old pace before you start worrying about 20Lb here or there.

Second question is what is the open length of the dampers fitted. ?

Cheers Matt

that aint no Indy, main feature of Indy is independant rear suspension

Hi

Lol that's true. But you would be amazed as to what has been done by some at the front end in terms of book setup which had the Mk wishbones failing. Or modded to indy style setup. Never take things for granted.

It's an early MK book chassis with live rear axle.
Open length of dampers is 185mm (7.25".

Hi

I take it that dimension is at ride height with car sat on the ground.

whats the bolt centers of the front damper when the chassis is jacked up so the wheels are hanging free clear of the ground. should be something like 12" - 13".

And what size wheels and tyres. And whats the height under the front chassis rail. ( before jacking the car up )

Cheers Matt

Hi Matt,
Doh.....silly me. Ignore previous dimension. With car jacked up and wheels off the floor the dimesnion is 12" between bolt hole centres. It's 8.5" where the spring would sit.
Wheels are 195/50/15 and with car sat back on the deck theres 4" to underside of bottom chassis rail.
Thanks,
Matt
PS - how's the ankles.

Hi

A 12" unit would normally run a 7" or an 8" spring max. I can only presume you have a very low poundage spring that needs compressing up quite a distance to hold the car up at desired ride height. Do you have any idea of current spring poundage. ?

Virtually all book chassis run with either 12" or 12 1/2" open dampers with 7" or 8" springs the only trouble with 7" is that there is sometimes the possibility of them being slack when in full droop and needing the thin helper springs to locate the spring on the damper collars.

Cheers Matt

No idea of current spring poundage......even with springs wound up lots, it's not sufficient to hold the car at the desired height.
What poundage would you recommend?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi

As explained in first reply ^^^. Somewhere around 300Lb - 350Lb depending on application / usage.

Cheers Matt
