Last night I was swapping the Falcons 5-speed for the 4-speed and when I bolted on the gearbox I noticed that the clutch release lever is rock solid
and when I took it apart I measured what I think is about 5mm spring compression...on all the time. To me thats not right and the bearing should not
be under load when the pedal is not pressed. right/wrong??
The clutch seems to work, it's just the preload on the bearing that worries me
What I think I have is a lever off a 2.8 but don't have a pinto lever to compare so here's some pic's.

could possibly be the height of the release bearing as fords have a few different ones ,might find you can rectify it by changing the bearing if the other parts are hard to get hold of
release bearing looks like the right one,did you change the clutch,is the center plate the right way round?
The bellhousing looks wrong to me, if you pull the lever all the way forward it is going to hit the spinning clutch, and I'm sure you shouldnt
see so much clutch through the hole, either that out the flywheel is too thick??

Hi, you should definately have some free play on the lever once assembled could be the wrong lever, do you have a sandwich plate fitted is the arm
fitted behind the mushroom head of the pin?
I personally think its the wrong lever there are a few different shaped ones

Another idea, has the clip on the back clutch arm fully located on the pivoting ball part of the bell housing, if it's not clipped over then that
will push the bearing end hard up against the clutch plate.

Can't guarantee that it is off same box as yours but the operating principle is the same.

Like has been suggested this may be the wrong lever arm and looking at it I may be able to modify it with the welder.
I don't think any thing is not standard on the setup, I'll have a look when I got home tonight.
