Visible thread on bolts
Thinking about it - 22/8/10 at 09:46 PM

How much thread of the bolt would Mr IVA man like to see protruding through the nut on items such as wishbones etc.?

madteg - 22/8/10 at 09:48 PM

three or four

Would have thought 1 would be enough, at least then the nut would be fully on.

For self locking nuts (nyloc etc) at least 3 threads - thats the aviation standard (not sure about IVA)

GMPMotorsport - 23/8/10 at 06:41 AM

Engineering standard is 3 threads.

britishtrident - 23/8/10 at 07:20 AM

Aim for 3 full threads.
Interestingly Nyloc nuts aren't effective and in fact tend to undo if right at the end of the thread.

That's true. All the thread must pass through the nylon insert.

3 threads.

Is it possible to put a nyloc to far on a bolt. By screwing it down a couple of inch of thread will you damage its lockingyness?

adithorp - 23/8/10 at 09:44 AM

I think at SVA they used to insist on 1 1/2 threads. 3 is standard as said above.

The nut is held tight by the presure and friction of the clamping force. The nyloc (or lock washer or locking tab) are just there to stop them undoing and falling off should the nut work loose.

There are locking nuts called k nuts ??which are as thick as a normal nut.
As a result if a nyloc has a single thread protruding, using these will result in having at least three threads showing.

Not really generally nylocs can be re-used a couple of times, but a dab of easy break grade Loctite is a good idea. Loctite also helps prevent the nut rusting to the bolt.

All metal self-locking nuts ( "Simmonds" nuts and K locks) can be re-used almost indefinitely. One advantage of Simmonds nuts is as they are undone they partly clean rust off the threads of the bolt without the nut jamming on the debris.
