Clonking viscous LSD
phelpsa - 10/9/10 at 07:02 PM

Was testing the brakes on the driveway the other day and noticed that under tight turns the diff clunks quite alot.

No idea what condition its in or the mileage it's done, all I know is I've just put fresh oil (of the correct grade etc) in it. Anything to worry about?

i think mine does the same under right hand bends

would love to know how to fix it

mine does too when pushing it out of the drive and turning hard.
its normal

Stott - 10/9/10 at 08:17 PM

Normal, there's no fix. The E30 rally car I co drive in skips the one wheel when turning as it's got a seriously ramp angled diff, I love it, clonk, clonk, clonk, clonk, look at my race/rally car, clonk, clonk clonk

hahahahaha

A viscous diff shouldn't really make any noise, but the plate ones can be very noisy.

Are you sure its not the Lobro joints ?

Nope, but there was no play in them when I fitted them to the car a few months back.

i replaced all mine, its not them.

Mine sounds like the prop hitting the tunnel (but it does not, checked it)

thought my diff is buggered, but if I am not the only one then maybe diff is OK

Its worth checking the bearings in the diff end of the shafts. If the angle is too steep for these, they clonk as they smash themselves through the gaps in the diff.

worth whipping the backplate off and having a good look at the sun/planet gears. One of my diffs 'clunked' which very quickly became 'banged' and then 'locked up'!! a stripped sun/planet gear set was the cause (very, very, sticky slicks on hillclimb starts and excessive right foot ;-)
