The new one is fitted with 185/60r13 front and 205/60r13 rears on 6" wide front rims and 8" wide rear rims.

Which is exactly the set up mine ended up with, and IMO is perfect for a high powered seven

An enlightened soul.

Everyone reaches this conclusion eventually.

Why the need for 2" wider rims on the rear for an extra 20mm?

I've gone for 185's all round on my indy fitted to 5.5 rims.

Just curious as mine is not on the road yet, am I likely to get any adverse handling issues with my set up?

Its all in the sidewalls my dear boy....

A lot of people would say a 205 is too narrow for an 8" rim as well...but in reality it squares the tyre off giving great grip.

With the set up above my car is totally neutral in handling unless you do something really stupid!

ETA: theres also a lot to be said for copying the best Caterham spend enough money on R&D on all aspects of the R500 - so I decided if it was good enough for them it was sure as hell good enough for me!

Cheers dude
It's a steep learning curve for me, up untill I started building the most i'd ever done on a car was change some pads lol

Didn't the older R500 use the MB mag rims that were maybe even 8.5" wide at the back.

I asked the same question and was pretty much given the same answer. I know a lot of people in tintops who've put 225's on a 6" wide rim so 205 on an 8" or 8.5" just seemed a bit strange to me at first...

I don't know what's best, but for autoslalom (the only time I can drive my car) I've got mid level performance summer tyres (Sumitomo HTR 200) in 215/50/13 front and back on 8" rims. I am not a good judge, but it isn't the car that makes me slow! Those tyres are very cheap, which makes them appealing.

has anyone got a link to these mag rims? cant find them!

It's refreshing to see someone going with tyres suitably sized for the application. I've seen some BECs going as high as 235 with the "wider = better" theory, and then wondering why they can't get any decent grip from them.
