How much power will a 1.8 Mgb axle take?
I would like to change my axle on my sylva star, Current axle is viva.
Is the pcd the same?
The same axle was used for the V8 mgb but that only put out 137bhp
no idea but you should be looking out for torque figures not bhp as its the torque figure that will destroy items
So many variables!
If you use slicks and hard launch down santa pod with only 100lb ft of torque it won't last long!
I had a turbo pinto engine running through a type 9 and english axle which worked brilliantly for years on a light car (Fury)with road tyres!
With live axles be very careful to put half shafts back the same side they come out! They do twist slightly which makes them much weaker run the
wrong way round!
For ultimate strength with a live axle either go for an Atlas axle or one fitted to the older RWD Volvo's. Some of the escort boys are running
big torque cossie engines withe these axles.
Try calling Costello in Bath. They will know. And they probably have up-rated bits to help.
The MGB V8 used the MGB axle but with the 3.08 CWP from the MGC, which effectively reduced the torque applied to the halfshafts.
I did a V8 conversion many years ago, and left the original axle in place, with the SD1 spec engine on a Holley carb about 160 BHP and about 150 ft/lb
@ 1600 rpm of torque the axle didn't give any trouble. But, at the time other converters we telling tails of broken halfshafts, and fast wearing
thrust washers, two of which are fibre.

1600 lb ft from an SD1 engine is very impressive!

I heard many years ago that the, believe it or not, Lada Riva axle is a good bit of kit. Alloy drums, needle roller bearings I think and the Ford prop shaft apparently is a direct bolt on. The width is also identical to the Ford item. Not sure about the PCD though. Anyone else know if this is totally correct?
