sierra rear hub nut torque?
-matt - 5/10/10 at 10:57 AM

ive fitted my rear hubs with new bearings, and have tightened them up as tight as i can with a small ratchet, so no where near 250 NM!

yet the wheels barely turn?

have i got something wrong here? or will they loosen up once on the road?

cheers

i'm approaching this stage, so would be interested as to how u get on.

not related to the brake calipers binding? handbrake cable?

best of luck.

They need to be that tight to make sure they are running true and dont prematurely wear out I used a long bar bolted onto the hub using wheel nuts and another long bar with the socket on and checked it using the torque wrench, wheels spin ok.

no its not the handbrake or disks binding as they are not yet on the car.

i think i may try loosening it off a smidge, so that it is still nice and solid, but turns a bit more freely, then when its had a bit of use, i will tighten it up gradually.

im not too worried about premature wear.

Don't back it off, it's a parallel bearing and should be very tight when first fitted. It will loosen up on it's own as you use the car. You are treating it as a taper bearing and it is totally different.

Had the same problem see link below

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=139929

After undoing the driveshaft nuts I found out I had nut pushed the oil seal into the carriers enough, after fixing this and tightening the nuts up again, I could rotate the shafts but they are still quite stiff.

Hope this helps,
Iain

cheers, it was the oil seals, the wheels move quite freely now.
