bob - 29/8/02 at 06:28 PM

Fitted Mountney wheel on boss and then to column.
Bit of a rattle steering wheel end, only bothered because on SVA they give it a good yank up and down and it dont sound healthy.

So,am i worried over nout as usual as my R reg escort does the same or is it possible to sort?.

I don't have an escort manual but I presume there is a bush in the steering column outer tube which may need changing ifthe movement in the wheel is side-to-side.

Sorry john, should have said its a sierra column and the rattle is up/down/and sideways.
Anyway yes, had a look tonight and theres a copper/brass like small roller baring so i'll look in book.
Cheers

I once had an escort mk4 and had to take the steering wheel off, when it came to putting it back on, I managed to break a plastic bush at the bottom end (of the column) and that left me with a lot of free play up/down, side to side. Something to check

Too true...

I'm using a Sierra steering column in my Locost - I took all the switchgear off, and found that I had to make a bush to go behind the wheel so that the steering wheel nut could pull everything together.

Your steering wheel nut is done up tight, isn't it Bob? If not, the whole of the top of the column will be loose.

cheers,

David

Yep done up tight dave,i'll sort a bush of some kind.
It seems common as i've contacted a friend with finished car,he had the same problem and bushed it too.
thanks to everyone for their input.

Thrust washer missing, just raided a dumped and very sad sierra for new washer.
