what does the 8.8 mean on the bolt head i need to replace some that has 8.8 on them

tonym - 11/12/10 at 09:03 AM

It is the tensile strength of the bolt. The higher the number the higher the strength. If it is an 8.8 replace with the same.

8.8 is the norm for all automotive uses ------ as a rule any bolt 8.8 or higher is considered high tensile.

Yeah, an 8.8 is a bog standard one.

Cheaper, lower tensile strength bolts do exist however.

5.8 - low strenght
8.8 - std grade
10.9 - std high tensile
12.9 - special app's

Most cap heads are 10.9 also.

It also means that it its a metric thread not imperial. (or, at least, it always used to,)
