OT (TinTop) - anyone rebuilt a power steering pump?
hobbsy - 12/1/11 at 12:20 PM

I think the power steering pump on my BMW M5 (E39 2001MY) is dead/dying.

I've only just started my research but it looks like its specific to the M5 = expensive new and rare 2nd hand (have emailed a breakers etc). Part number is 32412229037 if anyone knows anywhere good

I'm still waiting for prices but I think I'm looking at £500 to £600 for a new one and maybe £200 ish for a good used one.

I've never taken a PS pump apart - are they just a trochoid pump like an oil pump, like this?

or are they different?

Is it possible to rebuild one of these cheaply? Anyone know any specialists if it is difficult? Costs?

(EDITED as first trichoid pump image was MAHOOSIVE!)

I took a Ford one apart many years ago because it was noisy - it had lots of little sliding vanes and stuff. I fiddled with it for hours then................

I went to buy another form a scrapyard shortly after ..................

It depends on what the problem is,my rover 600 started to leak oil and get noisy and it turned out to be the bearing on the input shaft was collapsing.I stripped it and fitted a new bearing and it was fine afterwards. You do need to keep it all very clean and make sure the vanes go back in the correct orientation etc but it is possible to do,it just depends on how it has been assembled and whether you need any specialist pullers. If the vanes are worn though then the housing will also be, so may not be worth while.
