master cylinder choice for wilwoods (i know been asked before)
mads - 26/2/11 at 11:12 PM

so I'm building an Indy R and got wilwood disk brakes all round to fit. what master cylinder do i need to fit (and will allow me to be IVA compliant)? i've seen that the bore sizes for fronts tend to be 0.625 and 0.75 for rear.

the footwell end panel has only a single hole behind the brake pedal so does that mean I can only use a dual master cylinder or can I use two separate reservoirs without having to make the hole bigger? or is there a master cylinder with dual bore outputs of different sizes i.e. 0.625 for front and 0.7/0.75 for back?

and do i need a low brake fluid indicator on the dash for IVA? if so, what size m/c choices do i have?

cheers,

mads

I think your rear m/c needs to be a bit smaller if you have got 4 pot Wilwoods all round - 0.75" would be too large IMO. I used 0.60" Front and 0.60" Rear to get the right balance in my middy. A front engined car might benefit from a 0.65" Rear but a lot depends on the size of the discs you are using.

cheers Raz. I have got 255mm and 270mm discs (though currently awaiting help as in which ones go where).

Assuming you have the larger discs on the front, I would say that 0.60" Front and 0.65" Rear would be a good starting point. The 0.75" m/c would be more suited to the clutch IMO. Brakes are such a difficult subject and everyone will have their own way of setting things up. I could go into a lot more detail and ask about your caliper piston sizes, pedal ratio etc etc but if you have a bias bar then things are a little more adjustable and you can compensate a little either way.

*edit*

I have just reread your opening post and it looks like you might need a dual m/c (as fitted to a number of production cars). If you can make the necessary mods to the chassis, I would go for 2 x single m/c as you can play with the sizes a lot easier.
