well im about to start with the cooling system for my MK Indy R with a 2008 R1.

ive desided im going to use the radiator off a VW polo, will a header tank like this be fine: Race Car Performance Alloy Vertical Header Tank HE02 | eBay UK


but what else will i need? im assuming i will need some sort of thermostat in there somewhere? and a temperture switch for the fan?

or recomend any websites that will help me?

just im not very clued up on cooling systems.

I have an MK Indy-Blade, I used a header tank from Car Builder Solutions (Ref: Breath) it came with hoses etc for £54 and has worked fine, in the online catologue on the item it also gives you a simple diagram of a cooling system layout. You will also need a fan, again CBS do the kits which are simple to wire up and the thermal switch came from the scrap yard, also a good source for a locost fan of course, as regards to the thermostat I just used the one on the engine. I am using a Pro-Race radiator which has no fan switch. So I bought the adjustable fan controller from CBS which has a sensor that drops in to the top hose and connects up via 2 wires, one to the fan +ve and one to +12v (you can either have switched or permanent, it depends if you want it running with ign on or off).

The bonus for me is, I am using a different temp gauge to the one the temp sensor is meant for, so I have no idea where 'normal' running temperature is. With the switch, I can set it for the temp I want for normal, and when the fan kicks in, I can make a note of where the temp gauge needle is

Don't spend a fortune on a header tank new VW tanks area available for just over a tenner, also the usual Locost favourite the Rover 25 tank is easy to mount and compact.
Both these tanks have the advantage of being transparent so you can see the coolant level.

The VW rad has an M22 thread fitting for fan switch, loads of different M22 fan switches available, normal cut in temperature for fan swiches is around 95 to 98c.

Loads of small cooling fans on ebay look for a pusher fan.

thanks, ive just bought a polo rad (VW16), and went for a rover 25 expansion tank.

so i take it all i need now is:

fan switch

thermostat

hoses

temp sender/sensor

fan

then work out how its all plumbed in.


is that it? or have i missed anything?
