FWD Hubs

Am I being dim or is there any reason why I couldn't use FWD hubs from a Focus or Mondeo on a "standard" Locost. Would you not just blank the drive shaft hole either by cutting a drive shaft splined end and tack weld in to place or plate over and weld?

No reason why not. Thats what Rover did with the MGF.
You'd just use the outer section of the CV joint though. No welding required; just push it through and tighten the nut (you need it to hold the bearing together).

The main problem is the rack sits behind the uprights on pretty much all FWD cars, which means the steering rack goes right through the engine compartment in a Locost.

Not so much a problem if your car is going to be mid engined?!?

The RWD 911's do pretty much this, they use the same hub as the 4wd versions but with just a stub shaft instead of full driveshafts. (or they used to anyway)
