has anyone shortened a pair of mx5 halfshafts?
were they cut and welded or had splines re-cut
any ideas from anyone would be a great help.
thanks

I've not done exactly that but on my mnr I have sierra rear end but Honda s2000 engine, box, prop and diff. I had a set of sierra bolt on shafts and a set of Honda shafts from the donor. I took them to my local hydraulic specialists. (driveline in morecambe) and they mated the 2 together to my measurement. They look superb

I wouldn't recommend doing this, I ve driven a seven where the a cut and shut shaft has failed. I wouldn't trust them for the road.

I have done it on my car for the purposes of mock up, and will get new custom shafts made when im on the road,

I machined a tight fitting sleeve and then tig welded the sierra shaft one side and the volvo 850 one the other

its early days at the moment and have stil got to dismantle the mazdas rear subframe.looking thru the haynes manual for the mx it looks that the inner cv can be taken of and so if the shaft is same dia all along it may be possible to cut the length and then have the splines re-cut.if thats not poss then to cut and shut the shaft would need one half turned down and the other drilled and then a peg put though and the whole lot welded.
unless someone knows of apair of shafts off another mazda which are around 100mm shorter.
