1) Original diff which looks as if it's done a fair few miles. Though I haven't heard it running looking inside there's nothing chipped or broken but there are quite heavy deposits on the non gear surfaces. The outer cast iron casing has corroded quite badly such that the fins in places are rusted away but not sufficient to cause too much concern.
2) A much newer one which has had the internals (planet gears) welded for drifting. The internals are whistle clean and the outer casing looks brand new.
So the question is do I take the planet gears from the older diff and drop them into the newer one to restore the diffs function fully?
I appreciate there will be an issue over the crown-wheel and pinion meshing if I do dismantle then re-assemble but providing I ensure the side bearings supporting the crown-wheel go back in exactly as they came out then it shouldn't be a problem?
Presumably wear inside the planet gears will not affect the crown-wheel and pinion?
Anything-else to look out for?
Failing that anyone know of a company specialising in diffs in the Home Counties who won't charge a fortune to examine both diffs,
give an opinion swap the planet gears over if necessary?
