This is a newbie question, so apologies if it has been asked before.
If I want an LSD on my car, will I need the whole rear axle off of a XR4i or XR4X4, or do I just need the diff itself. i.e are half-shaft, prop shaft
etc from an non lsd sierra compatible with an LSD diff?

hi. there are two types of half shafts, lobro and tripode. The two arent interchangable i think. LSDs are found on disc rear ends.
sh*t im not much help am i.... i think LSDs can go with any disc back end, but im probably wrong. Cheapest way to get an LSD is to break the entire
car anyway, so then you have the full boomshmia to play with.
by the way, XR4i arent usually LSD. all 4x4s should be though, including the 2 litre ones which have the 3.92 ratio. Most others are 3.6.
Out of interest, which diff ratio is preferable, or does it depend on your engine?

the lower the ratio the faster it will go (within reason) the higher it is the quicker to 60 time will be.
The 3.18 (?) is apparently the one to go for from a diesel sierra... non-lsd. 3.62 if lsd. Our's is 3.62 and ours top's out at 114'ish.
0-60 4secs'ish... mate said 3.5 other night but that can't be right!

You can swap any normal diff for LSD of the same size on a disc brake rear end, drum brake setup uses different half shaft fixings. I got a 3.62 LSD
off a 4x4 for £75, just make sure if you get one that it is the same size and not a 7.5" if replacing a 7" one. To check measure the width
of the top mounting, standard Sierra open and LSD should be 7", Cossie and some Granada use a 7.5" mount.
With a standard MT75 gearbox and 3.6 diff on 15" wheels, 195/50 tyres I get 35/65/95 in 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7000rpm. 1st is a bit low but 2nd and
3rd just right, 5th is about 22mph per 1000rpm.
