Looking at buying a set of go-kart stub axles as below for my soap box kart project. The axles are Ø17mm, but I need Ø12mm with and M12 thread.

If I got a set of fleabay is there anyone local to me with a lathe who could turn the axles down for some beer money?

Presumably you would have to remove them first!

Good question that dawned on me after posting - not sure if they're removable or not!

The other option might be to cut them off, drill and tap the carrier to M12 then bolt my wheels on.

Assuming one could set them up in a jig, then drilling them out would be an option, but very tricky to get set up accurately enough. Similarly if they could be jigged on a face pate they could be turned on a gap bed lathe. Just curious?

Could be done pretty easily as is if the lathe can swing enough. a blank in the chuck with the same threads as on the end of the stubs, hold the shaft in a steady rest and do a small centre on the back side of the pivot housing. Then turn down from left to right.

I could do it but not near you unfortunately

wouldn't be a problem to hold them in a 4 jaw and turn them down.

You could just make some new ones.

Be aware that Kart stubs like that will be designed to have a large amount of castor, they give a large amount of "jacking" when lock is applied.

If you using larger than kart wheels this might be an issue if you fit them horizontally as designed.

Just to consider when you design the mounting brackets.

Thanks Fred - I had looked at that and revised my mounting ideas to suit, but it doesn't cancel it out completely.

I think I'm going to have a go at fabricating some uprights and hope I get it finished in time
