Is there anyone out there who intends to recon their own Escort rack, but don't know how?

I priced a recon rack the other day, £16+vat exchange from the wifes place of employment. I'm looking for one to exchange now, at that price I don't think I'd bother.

That's not bad. Which company is it?

I've got on that I want to exchange, but the tie rods have been hack sawed. Do you think they'd still take it?

Be carefull...I have had a bad experience with cheap recon rack from motor factors etc. Got a rack exchanged for my mini, got it home and discovered boot split, took it back, got another. Fitted rack, discovered rack bushes were knackered, knocking badly over bumps. Took it out, got another anf itted it. This one had a worn rack which was "compensated" for by winding up the preload to such an extent it wouldn't self center and was really notchy. Took it back, got another..err..hang on, this is the first one with the split boot. Got refund.

Seems that some peoples idea of reconditioning is to fit new boots, remove some shims to increase preload and dunk it in a pot of black paint.

I changed my rack over the other day. Leaflet in the box said that if the old rack is broken (cant be reconned by them) then they wont except it, and nor should the motor factors.

That's a bugger. It does work. It's just a little short, that's all

Well you can buy just the tie bars.....

Would be the next best. Not sure I'll get both of them and the replacement springs and ball seats for under £16 though.

What's the cost of having a sierra rack shortened?
