Tyre size choice (R888)
pekwah1 - 27/11/13 at 10:24 PM

Hi Guys,

I'm going to upgrade to R888 tyres on my car, but wanted to see what people reckon on sizes.

I'm running 13" wheels which i'm keeping, they're all 6J.

So, do i run 185s all round, or would it be better with 205s on the rear and is that really ok on a 6J?

Currently running a little 1.3 xflow with no power, but will very soon be upgrading to a 2.0 zetec with somewhere between 130-150bhp.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Cheers,
Andy

I run 186/60/13 front 205/60/13 rear on 7" rims as a lot of people do.

According to Toyo my rims should really be 5.5" front and 6" rear so yours are about perfect.

I have (well had...the heads off at the moment to sort out a leaky gasket! ) 130-140bhp in my Striker and that is perfectly balanced on 185's all-round on 13x6" rims. I have used A032R and now R888 in this size on the road and for several thousand track miles and it feels spot on to me....to me form follows function on this car so I have stuck with this size for 18 years now

IMHO save a few quid, dont follow 'fashion', and stick to 185's at the rear

Hi
we use 185-60-13 Toyo R888 80v all round,
we have a lightweight R1 engine producing 150 bhp.
we think this is the best choice we could have made.
well pleased with them.

I run 185-60-14. I know you have 13" but your question is regarding width.

I have 150bhp in my striker and they are fine. I am now at the stage of questioning my suspension set up but the tyres seem ok. They do overheat after about 20 laps so im trying to pin point the perfect pressure aswell.

I have a non LSD IRS back end and I can get power down early with confidence.

The final thin is with my 6j rims I cant imagine 205 fitting very well. My walls are vert sqaure if not tappered out slightly so the tread is as wide as the rim. Any wider and it would maybe not work as well.

6" rim = 150mm so a 185 tyre is slightly wider.

HTH.

nice one, cheers guys.
Yeh i thought 205 was a bit wide for a 6J myself, Toyo's website reckon it's bang on but i would have thought 6.5J or 7J would be better...

While we're on tyres, what's peoples opinions on a539s? i know they're not in the same league as 888s but what's the general opinion of them?

My friend has them on his Fury....I borrowed them a couple of times to try on my Striker and they are horrible compared to the 888's. Really hard and slide about all over the place with sudden loss of grip, not progressive at all.

hmmm, interesting....
i've read a few things saying they're pretty good as a road tyre, obviously wouldn't even really compare them to 888s!

I've got 539s on the back at the moment which have felt fine so far, but i've got some random weird tyres on the front that i want to change so it's either £100 on some 539s to make a matching set, or about £350 for the R888s.

Just not sure i have enough cash lying around for the 888s at the moment.....

I would vote for 185's allround.....you could always go to 205's later on if you find you are braking traction (which I doubt). My old westfield had around 170bhp, and lots of torque, and I would say that was about the limit for the 185's. if you are doing track days, you may even find it easier to get heat into the 185's...

ive agree with the other stick to the 185, also you can then swap front to rear if needed.

i run 7" with 205 60 but have 340bhp and it grips fine on medium r888
