I built one of the original irs fisher furys (year 2000) which has a single lower wishbone, fabricated upright with sierra hub and then a coilover
mounted to the top of the chassis in a turret. A bit like a front macferson strut but for the rear with no steering.
Does anyone know of a locost (particlarly mx5 based) or a kit car that has a similar set up (the fury is now double wishbone ax this was cheaper to
make).
Thanks in advance.
There was a car from some time ago that used a front wheel drive set up pretty much complete in a rear wheel drive car. It used a full macpherson
setup, with the only difference being instead of a steering rack there were fixed linkages to the chassis. The linkage gave a degree of rear wheel
steer, although I don't know whether that was a good or bad thing.
I thought it was one of the MEV cars (the earlier Focus based ones) but it doesn't look like it. If I manage to find it I'll post a link.
Thanks for the info, I think the Sylva Vectis uses something similar from an MGF. Think others to use this may have been the Raffo Belva and maybe the
cc cyclone.
Here is a picture of the Fury set up (sorry for dodgy quality, old film photo scan).
My thought were, why does no-one do a kit for classic cars using this approach, particularly the old english axle variants (capri, escort, cortina,
anglia etc.) with the frame bolting to the chassis rails and braced fore and aft to the leaf spring mounts. One of the first upgrades to my anglia
(once on the road) would be to fit an LSD and the correct ratio CWP, including the parts and build this is going to be close on £1k. If there was a
frame plus either Sierra (getting harder to find), 3 series or MX5 rear end with shortened drive shafts. I am sure you could do a kit for similar
money including the shocks with the benefit of being LSD, camber and toe adjustment and be independent.
Just a few thought of [possibly] a mad man !
