Mid engine power steering or not?

hey trying to work out what to go with...
donor car i brought has power steering, though they do make a non power steering rack ect.

is it worth running the power steering lines and having power steering?
with lines about 1.5m - 2m would it effect the efficiency / feel ?

good thing while building both line up with same holes ect so can build it with the power steering rack and swap later..


also first post here! long time viewer though



for those intrested using a k11 micra donor car ( 1.3 cg13de )
have one as daily driver and picked this one up cheap so thought why not

You shouldnt need to fit power steering. In a 7 style car with front engine the steering is very light, so moving all that weight to the back will only make things lighter still

mmm just have to track down a non ps rack, new belt ect

hopfully find a swap haha... pull it all out of the donor next few days if it stops raining when im not at work!

Given that you already have the kit and the build you are embarking on is not exactly tried and tested,why not give it a go and see the outcome?That way you will have something empirical to compare with should you go non PAS.Besides,loads of rear engined race cars these days have PAS..must be an advantage for it!

It's probably worth checking how many turns both racks types are from lock to lock. Non PS rack versions sometimes are lower geared (more turns) to make them lighter... Lots of turns might not be good in a kit.

Is there any words in the IVA manual about this?

My understanding is... everything should work as originally intended. In other words no. That said,opens up a big can of worms that!

I was planning on doing the same with my donor rack, but I got a similar response from elsewhere. It's 'questionable', and considering an IVA can pass or fail on 'questionable' I'm not taking the risk.

Looking foward to the build thread as I am planning something similar.

Being old I have experinced many front engined cars with no PAS, apart from parking there is no advantage in having PAS, my maestro tubby has no PAS and I prefer it that way as you get more feed back when driving.

PAS also takes a little power from the engine, not much but enough to make a difference.

When I get into actually building my project I plan to use an electric steering column to ease the effort requred in parking, most MGF's have powered columns, IIRC corsa's do too.

Definitely don't need the pas and of course without the pump will save space and weight. Dont know about the issue of converting to manual but if connections are missing or blanked off can the iva man prove if used to be pas?
