(gear?) Oil for steering rack?
ElmrPhD - 8/12/15 at 01:42 PM

Esteemed colleagues (or whatever...)

After sitting on the shelf for a loooong time, and apparently in a non-strategic position...my steering rack/box leaked some of its oil out.

It's what I believe is a fairly standard steering rack for kitcars - looks to be the old Escort type.

Does anybody know what type of oil it came with or what should be used to replenish my loss?

Sorry, but I have no way of knowing it's origin as my supplier is AWOL. It was either supplied by MNR or my supplier got it from god-knows-where.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Steve, in the NLs

Manual racks don't have any fancy lubrication requirements any gear oil will do.

I am depowering a rack and plan to use chassis grease instead of oil.
Although, it may be too thick?
Looking forward to more input from other locosters.

I did work on a car (an Austin) where the grease in the steering rack had to be electrically conductive, to make the horn work!

Last time I opened up a rack it was definitely more greasy than oily....
