bleeding hydraulic handbrake
luke2152 - 23/4/16 at 04:38 PM

Have fitted hydraulic handbrake and having real problems it getting the air out (ie. been at it all day). Tried bleeding as per any other brake system and no luck. Tried these instructions: http://www.driftworks.com/forum/technical/80820-correct-method-bleed-brakes-hydro-handbrakes-courtesy-mjg.html
Still no joy. Can get it bled enough for both foot and handbrake to be functional but really spongy.
Any other ideas? perhaps vacuum pump to suck on the nipple? (mmmm nipples hehe

Personally I would never connect a hydraulic handbrake into a serice brake circuit --- asking for brake failure.
If it happens and causes an accident all sorts of crap will descend on you.

What kind of brake failure? Surely rally cars wouldn't be using said setup if it couldn't be relied upon

Hi Luke, we have run hydro handbrakes on all our rally cars they are completely safe etc etc, I have a hydro on my Riot too.
Normal bleed procedures pull handbrake and tie/wedge up. Then bleed as normal on both sides. If you have had the pipes off or think you have a load of air stuck in the handbrake cylinder. You can try a presure bleeder and crack the pipe joints until they weep out fluid working down the system, depending on how many connections/joints you have, then bleed as above. If you use one of the pressure bleed kits that uses a tyre, make sure it's less that 15psi.

They can be a pain in the ar$e, feel your pain.

How will you get through mot or is it a track only toy?

It can have cables when needed.... ;-)

I will have cables fitted to the master cylinder linkage - just enough to satisfy the legal requirement

Any joy pal?

Yes! I did it in the end. Not sure exactly how but I tried the suggestions here and then just kept the master cylinder topped up - used the one man bleeder hose with the one way valve in it and pumped and pumped both foot and handbrake til I'd put a litre through the system and then closed the nipple and its good as gold.

Sounds about right, I love doing them.... Nearly as much as re packing cv joints...
