Maximum number of U J's?

Hi Guys,

Is there a limited number of U J's that can / should be used on a steering shaft.
I know common sense of as less as possible.

The setup I have made so far has two between the steering column and a shaft that's fitted to a bearing on the chassis, then two from the opposite side of the bearing down to the steering rack.

nope, just need to use good ones to reduce any play in the system.

Ask jeffW to post a piture if his new steering column......its a sight to behold and probably not out of place on a tractor (but I grant you it seems to work quite well)

It's certainly not under-engineered.

Jeffs works well and was the only way to get from the steering wheel to rack with the new pedal box and the plen chamber, Yes heavy duty but no play and it works as it should. Quality Steering joints are not cheap or small unless you want play in them

Hi guys, this is mine so far. Do you think I should add a second bearing directly after the first, towards the rack or is the one enough?

Can't remember where I saw it, but i saw a recommendation that the number of support bearings should be the number of UJs minus 2.

So 1 bearing for 3 ujs, 2 bearings for 4 and so on.

I'll see if I can dig out where I found it.

You need to fit another support bearing to the shaft that you have fitted one to all ready for the best results , they need to be as far apart as possible

Great stuff!

I have managed to move the forward uj (Closest to bearing and towards steering rack) closer to the bearing so my plan is to either get a bearing that can mount to the spline area or extend the tube to cover up more spline and mount the bearing to the extended tube.

I'd agree on that, the one bearing looks to be self aligning too?

Yep aggreed. I have ordered another bearing to add support.
